Gender Based Violence

Why focus on this?

One in three women globally experience violence. Girls growing up with violence are likely to become victims themselves and are less likely to enrol at school or drop out and not complete their education, which impacts their chances of accessing employment. Women in abusive relationships are also more likely to be coerced into pregnancies further reducing their ability to earn an income and continuing to be reliant on abusive partners. Violence therefore keeps girls and women poor. Also 70% of the 40.3 million people in modern slavery are women and girls. When broken down into different forms of modern slavery, females are overrepresented in forced labour (59%), forced marriage (84%), and forced sexual exploitation (99%). Conflict also often results in higher levels of violence against women and girls, including mass rape, sexual slavery, torture, forced prostitution, forced “marriages” and forced pregnancies. They also experience sexual abuse inside refugee camps. Abuse leaves lasting psychological damage including depression, injuries, infections and disabilities and unwanted pregnancies and even death.

How can we achieve this?

The above outcome can be achieved by supporting projects that:

• Provide women and girls with advice and information such as recognising abuse and exploitation and reporting it, safety and protection and accessing relevant services such as health and justice.
• Provide safety and protection for women and girls leaving abusive and exploitative situations of for those in vulnerable situations
• Provide support to women and girls to improve physical and mental health
• Provide education, training and resources to improve access to economic opportunities to enable survivors to rebuild their lives

Health and Wellbeing

Why focus on this?

Gender disparities have an impact on nearly every aspect of women's lives, including health. Women are biologically different from men and therefore have different needs throughout their lifespan. Although men and women suffer in poverty, gender discrimination means that women have far fewer resources to cope with their health issues leaving them further disempowered.

What do we want to achieve?

We want to ensure that women and girls have better life chances through improved physical and mental health and wellbeing.

How can we achieve this?

The above outcome can be achieved by supporting projects that:

• Provide women and girls with health information
• Provide of equipment, resources, medicines, projects to improve health and well being especially for victims of violence
• Provide training of community health workers
• Provide food, clean water and shelter

Education (Economic Empowerment)

In many countries, women and girls have less access to education, which is an important predictor of well-being. In low-income countries less than two thirds of girls complete primary school and only 1 in 3 girls completes lower secondary school. Girls with a secondary or higher education are not only more likely to access employment and earn more than those who are not educated, they are also less likely to get married at an earlier age.

We want to ensure that women and girls have better life chances by improving their access to education so they are in a better position to earn their own income.

How can we achieve this?

The above outcome can be achieved by supporting projects that:

• Provide education
• Improve access to educational opportunities such as equipment, resources and training for teachers

Livelihoods (Economic Empowerment)

Women who are not economically empowered can be trapped in cycles of dependence on men leaving them powerless to take their health and well-being into their own hands. When women are unable to earn their own income, they will be reliant on men for financial support and therefore less likely to leave violent relationships. Also, women and girls living in poverty are also more vulnerable to sexual exploitation and trafficking. Up-skilling and re-skilling women over their life course is therefore critical for their health and wellbeing as well as improving their income-generation opportunities and increasing their participation in the formal labour market. It is also important that building skills also includes keeping pace with rapid technological and digital transformations that affect jobs.

• Improve access to economic opportunities such as training, resources and equipment
• Improve their access to technology
• Provide microfinance for micro businesses
